2009 Awards

Fluvanna County High School – Journalism Magazine

$700 – Co-Curriculum
Elizabeth Pellican, Journalism Adviser, will use this grant to print the student-created Literary Magazine.

Fluvanna County High School – Technology for Math Classes

$575 – Core Curriculum
Angie, Blevins, Math Department Head, will use this grant to purchase a LCD projector to be used in math classrooms to show graphing, charts and complicated diagrams to the class.

Fluvanna County High School - Fall College Tour

$185 – Co-Curriculum
Kenneth Yowell, Teacher Advisor of Flucos for Change, will take a group of high school students who are participating in a program to promote college education to PVCC and UVA for college tours.

Fluvanna County High School – Cheerleading Uniforms
$200 – Extra Curricular
Scott Morris, Athletic Director, will use this grant to help purchase competition cheerleading uniforms for the Varsity Cheerleading Team.

Fluvanna County High School – Flucos for Change
$200 – Co-Curriculum
Kenneth Yowell, Teacher Advisor for Flucos for Change, will use this grant to take students participating in this program to a UVA football game as a reward to honor roll.

Central Elementary School – ESD Kudos
$99 – Teacher Development 
Cheryl Diadone will use this grant to puchase Kudo Bars to be used as incentives for a school-wide effective discipline program.

Central Elementary School – Read for All
$1000 – Co-Curriculum
Ruth Campopiano, Board Member for Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic, will use this grant to purchase incentives for the students who are participating in a school-wide reading program aimed at inspiring more students to read.

Fluvanna Middle School – Career Expo
$200 – Co-Curriculum
Julie Smith, School Counselor, will use this grant for transportation of the 7th grade class to go to the University of Virginia Career Expo.

Central, Columbia and Cunningham Elementary Schools – Parents as Partners
$1000 – Co-Curriculum
Marguerite Matics, Reading Coordinator and Allen Cook, Director of Elementary Education, will use this grant to purchase books as incentives for Title I students to teach them and their parents to read together.

Columbia Elementary School – Breakfast Buddies Mentoring Program
$54.00 Co-Curriculum
Nancy King, Media Specialist, will use this grant to purchase supplies for this mentoring program which pairs students with community volunteers to share breakfast and reading time at school.

Fluvanna Middle School – Learning with Interactive Whiteboard Technology
$838 – Core Curriculum
James Forman, Technology Specialist, purchased a Mimio Interactive Capture Instructional Tool.  This turns any dry erase board into an interactive whiteboard instantly.  This instantly turns a direct instruction situation into an interactive learning environment that will captivate and engage today’s digitally diverse learners.

Fluvanna County High School – Journalism Trip
$700 – Extra Curricular
John Benck used this grant to fund a journalism class trip to Columbia University in New York City.  This was a 5-day seminar on Journalism.

Fluvanna  County High School – Job Fair Trip
$75 Co-Curriculum
Amy Reese, Career Coach used this to cover travel costs for students to attend a Hire Education Job Fair a Piedmont Community College.

Families Learning Together –
$250 –
This grant provided program support for Families Learning Together. The mission of Fluvanna School's Families Learning Together is to break the cycle of intergenerational illiteracy by providing undereducated parents with the skills and opportunities to develop their potential and reach desired goals for themselves and their children.

Fluvanna County High School – Let’s Read Book Club
$750 – Extra Curricular
JoaAnne Washington and Kathy Craft, Media Specialists, used this grant to support the 4th year of the High School Book Club.  The monies were used to purchase additional books for the club members.

 

2008 Awards

Fluvanna County Alternative Education - Positive Action Program

$720 - Co-Curriculum

Jason Walker, Lead Teacher for Alternative Education, used this to implement the Positive Action Program in Fluvanna County's Intervention Center.  Positive Action is a research based program aimed at improving attendance and academic performance while reducing discipline problems in the school.  This grant provided two co-curricular program kits which will provide 140 lessons during the school year.

 

Fluvanna County Middle School - Avermedia Document Camera

$578 - Core Curriculum

Tom Casto, Math Teacher, will use this grant to purchase the Avermedia Document Camera for use in his 8th grade math classes.  The machine gives the ability to project both 2-D and 3-D figures on the screen.  Approximately 90 students from the 8th grade will benefit from this grant.

 

Fluvanna County High School - Let's Read Book Club

$630.94 - Co-Curriculum

JoAnne Washington, Media Specialist, used this grant to support the third year of the high school book club.  The monies were used to purchase additional books for the club members.

 

Columbia Elementary School - Web Books

$500 - Core Curriculum

Sue Sheridan used this grant to purchase sets of web books for the first grade students at Columbia Elementary School.  48 students will use these books on a daily basis.

 

Central Elementary School - Read For All - Co-Curriculum

This grant was used to purchase incentive awards for a month long reading program hosted by Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic at Central Elementary.  700 students in grades 3-5 participated.

 

Fluvanna Middle School - Career Expo

$200 - Co-Curriculum

Julie Smith, School Counselor, used this grant to fund transportation for the entire 7th grade student body to attend the career expo at the University of Virginia.

 

Central Elementary School - Imagine Learning English

$250 - Co-Curriculum

Lara Jenkins, Curriculum Resource, used this grant to purchase part of the license for software for Imagine Learning English program.  Forty students will benefit from this license.

 

Fluvanna Middle School - Learning with Technology

$500 - Core Curriculum

James Foreman, Technology Specialist, used this grant to purchase a Mimio Interactive and Capture machine.  This machine turns any dry erase board into an interactive whiteboard.  879 students will have access to this in this in their classroom throughout the year.

 

Central Elementary School - Reading Room

$150 - Core Curriculum

Lynn Fender, Title 1 teacher, used this grant to create a reading room for the Title 1 students.  This room is a place that is warm and inviting and conducive to learning.  6 students will use this room.

 

Fluvanna High School - Times Dispatch Workshop

$100 - Co-Curriculum

John Bench, Journalism teacher, used this grant to fund transportation for 6 students and 2 teachers to a workshop at the Richmond Times Dispatch.

 

Fluvanna High School - Word Dance

$550 - Co-Curriculum

John Bench, Journalism teacher, used this grant to fund the literary magazine produced by his journalism students.

 

Fluvanna High School - Spring Musical

$1000 - Extra Curricular

Craig Edgerton, Drama Director, used this grant to purchase rental fees, script scores, musical scores and royalties.  There will be three productions for the student body, as well as the community.

 

Fluvanna High School - Softball Pitching Machine

$500 - Extra Curricular

Nicholas Ward, Softball Coach, used this grant to purchase a softball pitching machine for the varsity and junior varsity softball teams.  50 girls in grades 7 - 12 will use this machine.

 

Fluvanna County High School- Soccer Goals

$1000 - Capital Improvement

This money was granted to Tara Garcia to purchase two additional soccer goals for the girls and boys soccer teams.  Approximately 80 students from grades 8-12 will benefit from this grant annually.

 

Columbia Elementary - Pennies to Play

$1000 - Capital Improvement

This money was granted to Nancy King to purchase of outdoor play equipment for the students of Columbia Elementary.  $500 of the grant was made possible from a previous grant to the Foundation from Tenaska Generating Station of Virginia.

 

Fluvanna County High School - Journalism Trip

$700 - Extra Curricular

This money was granted to John Benckto send Journalism students to a convention at Columbia University.

 

Fluvanna County Middle School - Mathathon

$250.00 - Core-Curriculum.

This money was granted to the Middle School math department to supplement those students who would otherwise not be able to participate in the mathathon.

 

2007 Awards

 

Fluvanna County High School - White Boards

    $239.75 - Core-Curriculum.

    Lori Hoffman used this grant to purchase dry erase write board for use in math labs and

    class rooms.

 

Fluvanna County High School - Avermedia machines

    $1132.18 - Core-Curriculum.

    Lori Hoffman used this grant to enable the FCHS math department to purchase

    Avermedia machines.  These machines are used during instruction to transfer teacher’s

    notes and worksheets to a screen in the front of the classroom.  This is an updated

    overhead projector system.

 

Fluvanna County High School - Let’s Read Book Club

    $753.05 - Co-Curriculum. 

    JoAnne Washington, Media Specialist, used this grant to support the second year of the

    high school book club.  The monies were used to purchase additional books for the

    club members.

 

Columbia Elementary - Book Buddies

    $99 - Co-Curricular

    Nancy King, Media Specialist, used this grant to begin a student/volunteer mentoring

    program at Columbia elementary.  The program will pair a student with a volunteer

    mentor to meet once a week for one on one reading assistance.

 

Columbia Elementary - Accelerated Reader Incentive Program

    $213 - Co-Curricular

    Nancy King, Media Specialist used this grant to purchase incentive prizes for students

    in grades K-2 who participate in the Accelerated Reader program.

 

Fluvanna County High School - Literary Magazine

    $700 - Co-Curricular

   John Benck and Anne Beckenstein, English Teachers, were awarded these funds to

    publish a student authored literary magazine and purchase new software to help in its

    creation.

 

Families Learning Together

    $56 - Co-Curricular

    Gayle von Keyserling was awarded these funds to purchase GED subsets for her

    students attending adult education classes.

 

Families Learning Together

    $94 - Co-Curricular

    Gayle von Keyserling was awarded these funds to purchase lunch supplies for parents

    of students attending education classes.

 

Fluvanna Middle School - Career Expo "Planning Your Future

    $196 - Co-Curricular

    Julie Smith, a Guidance Counselor, was awarded these monies to fund transportation

    for the seventh grade class to attend a career expo at the University of Virginia.

 

Columbia Elementary - Breakfast Buddies Mentoring Program

    $305 - Co-Curricular

    Nancy King, Media Specialist, was awarded these monies to fund a new program which

    pairs students with volunteers from the community to be role models and work with

    the students for a half an hour each week.  The program will provide breakfast and fun

    and educational games and books for the pairs to share.

 

Fluvanna Middle School - Enhancing Written Language and Life Skills through Assistive Technology

    $1,095 - Curricular

    Mary A. Turner, a Special Education Teacher, was awarded these funds to purchase

    Alphasmart word processors and fabric cases.  The object of this word processor is to

    be used for special education students it aids them in note taking and writing projects.

 

Cunningham Elementary - Creating Home/School Connections

    $773 - Curricular

    Karen Purnell was awarded these monies to purchase Bilingual storybooks, activity

    books, take home back packs and tape recorders to aid in teaching ESOL students.

 

Fluvanna Middle School-Project impact 

    $250 - Core Curriculum

    Rob Silverman, the bully prevention coordinator for FMS, used this award to pay for

    Adrianna Sgarlata, the director of Bully Police USA-Virginia, to speak during the schools

    community awareness event for parents and community members.

 

Columbia Elementary- Learning and Singing the ABC’s

    $184 - Core Curriculum

    Amy Fulk and Sue Sheridan, kindergarten teachers, used this grant to purchase a set of

    classroom books to help increase kindergarten students awareness of letters and letter

    sounds.

 

Fluvanna Middle School- The Ice Cream Parlor

    $182 - Alternative Curriculum

    Carol Rich, a special education teacher, used this grant to purchase items necessary

    for her class of 18 students to set up and run an ice cream parlor at school as part of

    hands on lab for their life studies class.

 

Fluvanna Middle School- Team Musical

    $200 - Co-curricular

    Karen Feathers, an Academic enrichment teacher, used this grant to purchase materials

    to create the set for her class musical, Fussin and A-Feudin, a “Romeo and Juliet” of

    the Hills.

 

Fluvanna High School- Spring Play

    $300 - Co-Curricular

    Craig Edgerton, a Drama Teacher, used this grant to purchase materials to create the

    set for the high school spring musical “Peter Pan”.

 

Central Elementary School/ Cunningham Elementary School- Orff Music

    $2,184 - Core Curriculum

    Cheryl Daidone, Music teacher for Central and Cunningham Elementary Schools, used

    this grant to attend training of the Orff Music education method as well as purchase

    various musical instruments to be used in teacher her students.

 

Fluvanna High School- Graphing Calculators

    $1,000 - Core Curriculum

    Angela Blevins, Math Department Leader, used this grant to purchase new graphing

    calculators for students at Fluvanna County High School.

 

Fluvanna County High School - Teacher Cadet Scholarship

    $1,000 - Scholarships

     These scholarships are awarded to students who participate in the Teacher's

     Cadet Program at the Fluvanna County High School and are interested in

     pursuing a career as an educator. Two awards in the amount of $500 each

     were awarded this year.

 

Patrick Finneran Memorial Scholarship

    $300 - Scholarships

    This scholarship was awarded to a student who has been a participant in Fluvanna

    county youth athletics and /or FCHS athletics and will be attending a 2 or 4 year

    vocational school.  This scholarship is being offered by friend s of the Finneran family

    as a memorial to Patrick Finneran, a member of the class of 2006.  The scholarship is

    managed by the Fluvanna Education Foundation.

 

 

2006 Awards

 

Fluvanna County High School - Teacher's Cadet Scholarships

    $1,000 - Scholarships

    These scholarships are awarded to students who participate in the Teacher's

    Cadet Program at the Fluvanna County High School and are interested in

    pursuing a career as an educator. Two awards in the amount of $500 each

    were awarded this year.

 

Central Elementary

    $500 - Professional Development

    Mr. Tom Patrick, principal of Central Elementary, used this award

    to purchase books for continuing education for teachers.

 

Cunningham Elementary - Breakfast Buddies Mentoring Program

    $895 - Alternative Curriculum

    Ms. Janet Harper, lead teacher,used this award to pairs students with trained

    community volunteer mentors who are positive role models.  The goal of this program

    is to intervene early by modeling citizenship, promoting positive behavior and

    enhancing a student’s self-esteem.  Breakfast Buddy mentors meet once weekly with

    the same child for breakfast at school all year long, developing affectionate and   

    nurturing relationships. 

 

Central Elementary - Teachers Book Group

    $220 - Professional Development

    Ms. Christa Clore, IB coordinator  at Central Elementary, used this award to

    purchase 10 books for the study of alternative and  creative approaches to

    curriculum presentation.  The teachers involved in the study are preparing for

    the International Baccalaureate program.  Once the initial ten teachers have

    completed their study they will then offer the books to an additional group of

    teachers to form a new study group.

 

Central Elementary - Play Ground Equipment

    $1,000 - Capital Improvement

    Central elementary used this award to purchase playground equipment for

    the lower elementary playground.

 

Fluvanna County High School - Book Club

    $700 - Alternative Curriculum

    Ms. Kathy Craft and Ms. Joanne Washington, Library media specialists at the

    Fluvanna County High School, used this award to purchase books for a

    student book club. The objective of this Book Club is to encourage and

    promote reading for pleasure and to develop reading as a life long skill and

    interest.

Fluvanna County High School - Literary Magazine

    $500 - Alternative Curriculum

    Mr. John Benck, a Fluvanna County High School English teacher, used this

    award to fund the Fluvanna County High School Literary Magazine.

    The publication is designed to support teachers and the High School's English

    department  in developing alternative and creative approaches to curriculum.

 

Central Elementary - Presidential Physical Fitness Program

    $300 - Co-Curricular

    Central elementary used this award to purchase patches for the students that

    were awarded the Presidential Physical Fitness Award.

 

 

2005 Awards

    These scholarships are awarded to students who participate in the Teacher's

    These scholarships are awarded to students who participate in the Teacher's

    Cadet Program at the Fluvanna County High School and are interested in

    pursuing a career as an educator. One award in the amount of $500 each

    were awarded this year. This was the first year the Foundation was able to
